Does the Quran Explain Embryology?
What Is the Embryology Miracle Claim?
When talking about scientific miracles in the Quran, Many Muslim apologists claims that the Quran contains scientifically accurate descriptions of embryonic development that could not have been known in the 7th century.
They point to verses such as Quran 23:12–14 and argue that these verses reveal knowledge that was only confirmed by modern embryology, making the passage evidence of divine revelation.
However, this claim rests on two assumptions: first, that the information was unknown before Islam, and second, that the Quran's description accurately matches modern embryology. Neither assumption holds up under closer examination.
Ancient Knowledge Before Islam
Not only is this claim inaccurate, but about a thousand years before Muhammad, a guy named Aristotle (pretty famous guy), who is regarded as "The Father of Embryology", had already written an entire book about the subject in detail. Then another Greek, by the name of Galen, about 500 years before Muhammad was born, spread his understanding of how bones and muscles develop, including how they form in the womb.
What did Aristotle teach?
Based largely on his observations of chicken eggs and other animals, Aristotle argued that an embryo develops gradually rather than existing fully formed from the beginning. He described the embryo as developing in stages, believing that the heart was the first organ to form, followed by the other organs.
Aristotle also taught that the male supplied the embryo's "form" while the female supplied the material for development, which modern biology has already debunked.

What did Galen teach?
Galen described embryological development in four stages.
In the first stage, the semen predominates.
In the second stage, the embryo is filled with blood.
In the third stage, the main outlines of the organs have developed but various other parts remain undeveloped.
In the fourth stage, formation is complete and has reached a stage where we can call it a child.

So ugh, spoiler alert, a lot of Galen's teachings on how muscles and bones develop have since been debunked (also Aristotle's ideas), probably due to the fact that his knowledge mainly came from theory and from his dissections of animals (he never dissected a human).
Unfortunately for Islam, similar inaccuracies are found in the Quran about this topic.
And indeed, We created humankind from an extract of clay, then placed each ˹human˺ as a sperm-drop in a secure place, then We developed the drop into a clinging clot, then developed the clot into a lump ˹of flesh˺, then developed the lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, then We brought it into being as a new creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
So 1st point is that knowledge about embryology already existed prior to Islam. So Muslim's can't claim that Muhammad revealed knowledge that nobody knew if said knowledge is already known centuries ago.
2nd point is that it is suspicious on how the Quran made similar claims (including the debunked information) to Galen's teachings.
3rd point is that regardless of whether the Quran copied from Galen's teachings or not, it does not change the fact that modern biology disagrees with the embryological sequence described in the Quran.
