What Are the Benefits of Singing Prayer Songs?

Why Sing Prayer Songs?

There are many reasons , but the main reason for singing prayer songs is to remind yourself of God's presence.

1. Reminds You of The Presense of God

The act of singing requires focus, controlled breathing, and attention to rhythm (Don't belive me? Try singing any song).

Because of this, prayer songs naturally draw our concentration away from other things (like our inner voice, thoughts, surroundings, etc.) and toward what we are singing about, in this case, God.

Singing prayer songs then draws our concentration toward God. And when others hear them being sung, they are reminded of the presence of God.

2. Songs Make Prayer Easier To Remember

Musical versions of prayers help people remember the words more easily because you add melody and repetition together, it sticks in the mind far better than spoken text alone.

An example of a prayer turned into a prayer song is "Amina Chrisiti", which is a 14th century Christian prayer song.

đź’ˇ
Fun fact: "Anima Christi" is a Latin phrase which means "Soul of Christ" in English.

The original Anima Christi was simply a spoken prayer. Over time, it has been adapted into various musical versions. Two of the most common are the Latin version and the English versions (popularized by Filipino composers).

To note: The English version is missing the line "Sanguis Christi, inebria me" which translates to "Blood of Christ, inebriate me". Inebriate means to make drunk.

3. Encourages Unity in Worship

When we sing as one, it creates a sense of unity. Because we are social beings, hearing others sing naturally draws us to join in.

Even those who might hesitate to pray aloud often find themselves singing when everyone else does.

In this way, prayer songs build a deeper connection, not only with God, but also with the community around us.
